Now in its third year, the University of Baguio School of Nursing Red Cross Youth (UBSN RCY) headed by their adviser Mr. Jerome Changitan, in partnership with the School of Nursing Extension, Community, and Outreach (SN-ECOS) headed by Ms. Fawn Maday-a, the SN- ECOS coordinator and the School of Nursing – Student Administrative Council (SN-SAC) headed by Mr. Philip William Alvarada, the SN- SAC governor, once again brought joy to the hearts of young children ages 3 to 8 years old in Barangays Pucsusan and Happy Hallow through their annual “Box of Joy” event on November 24, 2024.

This year’s event was filled with laughter, excitement, and a sense of community engagement. The children’s eyes sparkled with delight as they participated in interactive hygiene lessons such as proper handwashing and toothbrushing, played engaging games, and listened to captivating children’s stories.

The highlight of the event was the much-anticipated gift-giving ceremony, where a total of 246 gift bags were distributed. As the children received their personalized gift bags, their faces lit up with pure joy. The entire School of Nursing community came together, with each year level contributing specific items to the gift bags. Freshmen provided toothbrushes and toothpaste, sophomores donated hand soap and hand towels, juniors contributed notebooks and pencils, and seniors provided coloring books and crayons. Clinical instructors generously provided snacks and goodies for the children.

In addition to the smiles and laughter, UBSN RCY President Eioul Romm Jacob took a moment to reflect on the tradition that has now become a hallmark of the School of Nursing’s community outreach efforts. “I also want to express my deepest gratitude to the former presidents and advisers of RCY who started this remarkable tradition. Their vision and dedication laid the foundation for what Box of Joy is today. It’s because of their efforts that we’re able to continue this meaningful program, and I feel honoured to carry on the legacy they built. Seeing the smiles of our beneficiaries and the unwavering commitment of our volunteers inspires me to keep this initiative thriving for years to come,” Jacob shared.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 4, 10, 11, and 17, promoting good health, quality education, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, and global partnerships. By bringing smiles to their faces and providing essential items, the UBSN RCY and its partner organizations, have once again demonstrated their commitment to social responsibility and community welfare.
