Small Hands, Saving Lives

In a pioneering move towards equipping young learners with essential life-saving skills, the University of Baguio School of Nursing recently conducted a Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid Training for kindergarten students at Mabini Elementary School on February 23, 2024.

“Teaching kindergarten learners BLS is crucial as it empowers them with foundational skills to respond in emergencies, fostering a sense of responsibility and potentially saving lives in situations where quick action is vital,” said Ms. Analyn Chagao, a kindergarten teacher, in an interview.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG No. 4 (Quality Education), this initiative aims to highlight the importance of early exposure to emergency response techniques and to instill a sense of preparedness and empowerment among young learners. By equipping children with the knowledge and confidence to act in critical situations, they are better prepared to contribute to the well-being of their communities.

The practical skills demonstrated included “Duck, Cover, and Hold-on,” basic first aid for kids, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Ms. Kathy Trocolli D. Alalag, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Level IV student, demonstrated “Dock, Cover, and Hold-on” and evacuation techniques through an engaging song. Mr. Dennis Rommel C. Paraiso, a School of Nursing faculty member, demonstrated basic bandaging. Mr. Vince Paul O. Andaya, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Level IV student and President of the Red Cross Youth Baguio City Chapter, demonstrated CPR for adults. Assisting with the training were Ms. Aissa Pater, a Clinical Instructor and the SN ECOS coordinator, along with Clinical Instructors Ms. Jennifer Balinsoy and Mr. Jerome Changitan from the School of Nursing, who helped demonstrate basic skills to the kindergarten students.

“The event was successful, enjoyed by participants, and appreciated by the school head. We, the kindergarten teachers, together with the school head of Mabini Elementary School, would like to extend our deepest gratitude for granting our request, and we look forward to working with you again,” added Ms. Chagao.
