UB Nursing Student Presented the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students

The University of Baguio proudly congratulates Miss Micah Turiano from the School of Nursing (SN) for being conferred the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students in the year 2023.

An acronym for Disease Attacking the Immune System, the DAISY Award is an international award presented to nurses and nursing students for the care and kindness they put into their work. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of Patrick Barnes, who was affected by an auto-immune disease. The compassion of the nurses who had taken care of him inspired them to establish the DAISY program, dedicating themselves to recognizing individuals who have done their job with commendable skill and goodwill.

Thousands of healthcare facilities and schools around the world are bestowed the DAISY Award for their outstanding nurses, nursing leaders, and nursing students. This marks the first time that the University of Baguio has received such an accolade.

“I offered to stay beside the patient and give up my breaks just so my patient’s son could eat and change at home. I told myself that this was nothing compared to them being here 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while I only get to stay here for six days.”

Miss Turiano was one of two students who submitted their applications through the university to be reviewed by the DAISY Foundation and Health Carousel Philippines Inc. (HCPI). Kathy Alalag, who qualified as a nominee, was also presented with a certificate and a DAISY nominee pin.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Students recognizes the difficulties that nursing students go through during their academic journey and commends them for their determination to provide care to their patients. It is a celebration of the history of nursing as a profession that is dedicated to saving lives and ensuring that the sick are treated with dignity and respect.

“Nursing is, undoubtedly, a difficult profession. It can get filthy, unpleasant, and stinky. Sleepless nights and skipping meals are unavoidable. But those things are now only a minor part of it since, at the end of the day, I’ve discovered what nursing is truly about. Nursing is a passionate sacrifice in pursuit of helping other people.”

The UB School of Nursing continues to dedicate itself to training bright future nurses who will be able to work with competence and compassion. Through programs like the DAISY Awards, the university encourages students to pursue academic excellence that will reflect exceptional professionalism after graduation.
